Gospel Mass by Robert Ray performed in a benefit performance for The National Museum of Gospel Music.
This is a benefit concert for completion of the National Gospel Music Museum at the former home of Pilgrim Baptist Church, 3301 S. Indiana in Chicago. Pilgrim Baptist Church was literally the womb for the creation of Gospel Music when Thomas A. Dorsey was Music Director there. The building itself is still on the national register of historic buildings even though it burned in 2006. The original building was the 2nd home of KAM Synagogue, the first synagogue in Chicago dating from 1847. The architects were Adler and Sulivan who also designed and built the Auditorium Theater and other Chicago treasures. Adler's father was the Rabbi at KAM. When KAM moved to 50th and Drexel, which is now the HQ of Operation Push and the Rainbow Coalition, they sold the building on Indiana to Pilgrim Baptist Church. After the fire, only the north and west outer walls remained. Those have been stabilized and the plan is to construct the museum inside the remaining walls "honoring" the original Adler and Sullivan design.
